From May 27-28, 2018, at least 20 Russian-government connected Twitter accounts launched an information operation pressuring Italian President Sergio Mattarella to resign using the hashtag #Mattarelladimettiti. The campaign was initiated after the President refused to appoint anti-EU Paolo Savona as Minister of Economy, according to Corriere.it. Researchers at Clemson University initially discovered the Russian accounts’ connection to the resign movement, and Twitter later confirmed the accounts connection to the Russian government-connected Internet Research Agency (IRA). According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the IRA is “a Russian organization engaged in operations to interfere with elections and political processes.” Evgeniy Prigozhin, “a Russian oligarch who is closely identified with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” provides funding and support for the IRA.
